What does the Bible say about greed?  1 Timothy 6:10 is a widely and famously known verse from the Bible.  It says, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  But yet it is so often misquoted.  Many erroneously say, “Money is the root of all evil,” when the verse clearly says “For the love of money is the root of all evil.”  That’s greed!  And the Bible has a lot to say about greed. What is Greed?  Greed is a selfish desire for more of something than is needed.  Some of us may have a desire for more money.  There’s nothing wrong with money, nor even a desire to have more money; but when our desire interferes with, or exceeds our allegiances to God and family, it then becomes a god that we worship.  And we must not worship the Almighty Dollar.  It was out of greed that Delilah betrayed Samson, and Judas betrayed Jesus.  Some of us may have a desire for more things.  We want more cars, houses, land, etc.  It’s okay to have things, but we can’t take them with us when we die.  Job said in Job 1:21a, “…Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither…,” and Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21, ” Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Some of us have a desire for more pleasure; such as, sex, alcohol, entertainment, etc.  Some things we enjoy in life are good, and some are not.  But regardless of what we do for pleasure, we must not desire, by way of greed, pleasurable things over God.  And some of us may have a desire for more power and recognition.  We need to be humble, and not greedy for power and attention.  What is the problem with greed?  A greedy person is never satisfied.  Greed is a sin against God, and greed will cause trouble in our life.  Well then, how can we overcome greed?  In the verse following 1 Timothy 6:10, Paul said in verse 11, “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” (1 Timothy 6:11).  So often, we have a tendency to be unsatisfied with what we have, and as a result, are greedy for more.  It would do us all a whole lot of good to realize, that in Christ, we are unbelievably rich.  Paul said such in 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”  If we would realize the truth of that verse, we could then overcome greed, and say as Paul said in Philippians 4:11, “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”
